Sri Lanka

Known as the “gem of the Indian Ocean”, the island country of Sri Lanka is a fantastic destination for tourists and traveling nomads alike. In this article, we will discuss some of the many reasons why you should consider adding Sri Lanka as a destination your journey across Asia.

Sri Lanka has a wide range of different cultures, which means there are all sorts of different things to do. One of the first reasons to visit Sri Lanka are the amazing food that they have to offer. Although the country is located right next to India, the flavors of Sri Lanka are very unique. In fact, Sri Lanka cuisine is often described as being a mix of spicy flavors of Thai food, with the lighter and milder flavors of the Mediterranean. No matter where you go in Sri Lanka, you will be sure to find amazing dishes that will delight your taste buds. If you need a few good ideas on what to order, here are 7 dishes that you should consider ordering when you visit.

Sri Lanka also has amazing places to hike, which is something that almost all nomadic travelers are into. Little Adams Peak is a popular hiking trail if you need a good suggestion, but in all honesty, any of the hiking trails that you come across in Sri Lanka are full of beautiful scenery and will just leave you in awe at the sheer beauty of nature itself.

If you want to live “luxuriously” then also consider taking the Kandy to Ella train, which is amazingly cheap at just $1.50 for the 5-hour journey. The train ride itself is so amazing, as you cross all sorts of beautiful villages and bridges and even some tea plantations as well. The first time I rode the train, I could barely take my eyes away from the scenery for the entire 5-hour ride. It was truly breathtaking and something that you simply have to see for yourself to believe.

The aforementioned tea plantations are also something worth checking out while in Sri Lanka. And Sri Lanka certainly has a lot of tea plantations situated around the country. Just walking through the plantations will give you a good sense of what makes Sri Lanka unique, and it is something that many people overlook in favor of more traditional hikes through more natural habitats.

Sri Lanka is also known to a breadth of unique wildlife, making a safari a great way to spend one of your many days in Sri Lanka. We definitely recommend using an official tour guide or tour company, as it is much safer that way, and it doesn’t make the experience any less exciting (in fact, it is even better since you have experts pointing things out for you and telling you everything you could ever want to know). Common safari tours involve riding in a jeep and simply going through the jungle and observing all of the wildlife that is present during the tour. If you are an avid photographer, this is definitely something that you will want to do!

Although we’ve given some of the many reasons why Sri Lanka is such an awesome destination, in reality we only scratched the surface when it comes to all of the amazing things you can do there. But this only further proves just how amazing Sri Lanka can be for nomadic travelers in particular – with so much to do, there’s just no telling how long you will want to stay at this beautiful island country!
